UnSung, Where Did These Talented Black Stars Go?

Have you heard of TV One?  Is it in your town?  TV One is a black network that has tons of fantastic black programming.  They show reruns of the great black sitcoms and they also do special shows like “Lisa Raye, the Real McCoy” which is a reality tv show of the star’s life as she gets back into the game of Hollywood.

TV One also does a food show with G. Garvin, a very cool brother who can burn in the kitchen!  But the show that I like best by TV One is called “Unsung” which looks back on the lives and careers of black artists that we all loved, but who disappeared from the scene.  TV One’s Unsung goes out and finds these talented brothers and sisters and does very entertaining shows around how their careers started and background info on their lives and the issues that caused their careers to wane.  Unsung is an hour long show, which is very well done, always entertaining and gives great closure on our favorite artists!

They’ve done episodes on Teena Marie, Zapp and Roger, Donnie Hathaway, Florence Ballard, Bootsy Collins, Rose Royce, Minnie Riperton, and recently did a show on the multi talented Angela Winbush http://www.tvoneonline.com/shows/show.asp?sid=1191&id=3093 that was fantastic and had me shedding tears for her triumph!

It was wonderful for me to understand where and how Angela honed her skills, built her career as a producer in a time when women weren’t really doing that, and how she overcame cancer!  A very strong woman!

One of TV One’s best shows was done of the Debarge family and all the turmoil and heartrending issues that the talented siblings endured.   This episode gives the FULL report!  Check out the following videos.

Unsung is one the TV One’s best shows.  They have a website which I have linked, so check them out and  find out if the show is available in your town.   If so, tune in and be greatly entertained!

Got to catch the network when I lived in Detroit, briefly, via AT&T U-verse and DirecTV. But here in Omaha, it doesn’t seem to be available. I will have to check on it through the website.

Thanks so much for sharing that Angela link. I haven’t had a television(by choice) in my home since 2007 so I miss out on a lot of thangs. You won’t believe this but I was seconds away from blogging about this same topic just a few days ago after hearing the review from friends and viewing a clip from the miss Winbush program. I had no idea that Angela was so damn thorough in the game.

I was so young when Angela and Rene broke up but I do recall the sudden shock to everybody and the grandmammy(like getting the wind knocked out of you) when they broke up. Listening to that ‘my first love’ intro sent chills down my spine fo sho. “As long as I live…my 1st lub.” And of course like errrybody else I had no idea about Rene’s issues…of course I cracked up when the real thang video came on….heehehee!

    Greetings, Sista Anna:

Sadly, we don’t get TV One here in my ville. In fact, nowhere in the immediate area. Could it be because blacks are not the largest minority here in this section of NY? However, Latinos are, & the current programming schedule reflects that shift. I actually wrote a letter to Cablevision about it. No reply.

It pisses me off the read the back of Jet Magazine & see all these listings for shows & specials that won’t be broadcast in this area. Seems almost cruel. 😦

What I usually do is check out certain segments once they’re posted on You Tube. I did that w/ the Melba Moore installment of Unsung… which was good, & very informative.

But as of right now, I & the blacks folk in this general vicinity remain TV One-free.

    It sucks, yo.

I like UnSung. I’ve only seen it via Youtube, as I don’t have cable.

Have you seen the episode about Phyllis Hyman? That was very interesting. I read her biography so it was interesting to see this show as well.

I also read Bunny DeBarge’s biography, which was very interesting. And the UnSung episode was a nice compliment to that as well.

Jet magazine has a feature, ‘where are they now’, which is like UnSung and really interesting.

@Mark, you won”t regret watching it!

@Qwami, I knew you’d be up on it! But it’s nice to watch the entire episode! I didn’t know she was so deep in the game either! And doggone good!!!! Her songs are classics! I like how Lalah Hathaway described Angela’s approach to a song as if a mother is telling her daughter a story! Or giving a life lesson! She’s just the reeeealll thaaaang!

@Lin–go online and watch!!! TV ONE online, boo! Catch everrrrrythang you been missin’!

@Val–go online and watch!!! TV ONE online, sugar! Catch everrrrythang you been missin’!
I missed the Phyllis Hyman episode though! But I caught Roger & Zapp, which was too much, since one brother did kill the other out of jealousy. Tragic Cain/Abel ending!
