I’ve just learned of the powerful and prophetic preaching of Dr. Debra J. Mumford! I love a good preacher, who knows how to deliver a sermon with fire! Someone who knows the intricacies of our black style of prophetic preaching – the type that got Rev Dr. Jeremiah Wright in so much trouble! Ha! The beauty of black prophetic preaching is that it delivers an important message of continuing to be a help and blessing to the “least of these” as Jesus taught. Black prophetic preaching at its best is always focused on social justice – setting the captives free.
So when I found these clips of Rev. Debra, I was blown away by her passion and the importance of her message to the black church! To whom much is given, much is required. The black church was given the banner of social justice, even as we preached for our own freedom from oppression and second class citizenship. So we have a resposibility to continue in that magnificent and blessed tradition. We can’t stop now, falsely believing that we have reached a level of equality. There are others who do not have that “equality” and it’s required of us to continue the fight.
Dr. Mumford preaches at the 9:00 mark in clip 2, and in clips 3 & 4 that we “need to repent our sins, and moreover, our complicity with sins as well. In other words we need to ‘live our faith'”. Amen!
